Your Weekly Event Roundup: Aug 24th – 30th

A hand picked selection of our favorite things to see, eat, drink and watch this week.

See An Art Show

Once a month the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Av. LIbertador 1473) opens their doors on a Thursday night for special art party. Don’t miss your chance to see special installations and live music. You can kick your weekend off in Palermo or San Telmo at two separate art openings (or have an epic cross town art themed Friday). On the northern side of town, is the collaborative show Consideraciones sobre el paisaje I at SODA (Bonpland 1463), a collection of work related to space and landscape by 8 different artists. On the southern end of the city, check out Federico Villarino’s Las fuerzas extrañas at El Mirador Espacio (Brasil 301). Villarino’s work is characterized by a mixture of geometry, nature, technology, color and texture. Saturday afternoon hop over to La Boca or Boedo for two afternoon art shows. Prisma KH (Wenceslao Villafañe 485) from 3 to 7pm will be showcasing works by artists Sofía Bohtlingk and Nani Lamarque will be sharing the space with music by DJ Ex Mujer. We are huge fans of Bohtlingk’s large format oil paintings for their colorful and chaotic abstractions of the organic and the geometric. Over in Boedo, Odd CG will be hosting a Typography Festival (Castro 919) for all the graphic design nerds out there beginning at 5:30.

Catch A Film

In celebration of the Argentine release of Jacques Doillon’s lustful Love Battles (here’s the NSFW trailer) which you can catch Monday through Wednesday, the Teatro San Martin (Av. Corrientes 1530) will has put together a retrospective of his work with The Three Way Wedding, Just Anybody, and Touched in the Head from Thursday through next Monday. More info here. The CC Recoleta (Junin 1930) pays homage to Alberto Kipnis, respected film curator and founder of some of Buenos Aires’ first art house cinemas with Luchino Visconti’s Death in Venice on Thursday at 5pm. This is the film adaptation of Thomas Mann’s classic novel about a composer who moves to Venice for new inspiration and becomes transfixed with a local young man. Casa de la Lectura (Lavalleja 924) will be wrapping up their two month series about contemporary Mexican cinema with Gabriel Nuncio’s film Cumbres on Friday at 7pm. The film is about a young girl that sets off into the remote Monterrey deserts in search of her older sister who has been caught up in an accident.

Act Like a Tourist

Explore one of our favorite neighborhoods, check out the San Telmo Art and History Walk by the guys over at Buenos Aires Art Tours. The tour spends and afternoon learning about the history of the neighborhood through it’s vibrant walls. Explore the Congreso neighborhood and take a tour through the beautiful Palacio Barolo.

Eat Good Food

No longer do you have to suffer through the Microcentro work crowd to get the city’s best pancho. DOGG has opened opened up their second location in Tribunales (Lavalle 1134) to get your hot dog fix. Mi Barrio Hamburgueseria has also opened their second location in Palermo Soho (Uriarte 1504), we recommend the Barrio Parque with panceta, goat cheese, and grilled pears and almonds. Carb lovers unite because Italian Food Week will be taking over the city Monday through Sunday. More than 30 restaurants will be offering special multi-course fixed menus at special promo prices – $135 for lunch and $240 for dinner. You can find us over at La Locanda (Jose Leon Pagano 2697) trying out whatever Pane Carrasau di Ovodda con pomodori is before popping over to Siamo nel forno (Costa Rica 5886) for some pizza. For info on all the restaurants and menus, click here.

Let’s Party!

Psychedelic digital tropical cumbia (that’s a mouthfull) is the theme of the week. Turn your run of the mill previa into a dance party at two early (for local standards) album release parties. Friday night El Remolon will be presenting remixes of his 2014 album Selva at CASA A (Ancon 5168) together with an album art exhibition, videoinstallations, an interactive art installation and free beer(!) from 8-10pm. Saturday night is the release of Fauna’s much anticipated album Psychedlia cosa seria at Palermo Club (Borges 2450). They’ll be playing together with Chancha Via Circuito, El Chavez and the booty shaking (not an exaggeration) dance team Altas Wachas.

Check Out a Show

Thursday night indie rock show in San Cristobal, anyone? Hallo Discos is putting on a Vinyl, Cassette and CD Fair with shows by zona sur bands Atrás hay truenos, La suma de todos los tiempos, and Bosques. Javi Punga and Tobogan Andaluz will be playing at the new El Emergente (Figueroa de Acuña 1030) on Friday night at Festi Indiana, which will include shows by three other bands and a collective art show. On Saturday the CC Matienzo (Pringles 1249) will be hosting El Festiset, a film festival without any film. There will be shows by La familia de ukeleles, Jvlian and Nos vemo’ en sidney, with DJ sets by Billy & Gin and Alonso Morning to get the dancing started.
