Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

What a beautiful speech.

It’s a rainy three day weekend in Buenos Aires, and I find myself home alone on a Friday for the first time in … well, a long time.  I listen to the rainwater splashing as cars drive by, which you wouldn’t normally hear five stories up, but my windows are quite drafty.  I feel that the rain is appropriate and I’m grateful for an evening of contemplation.  I felt somber due to the death of Steve Jobs.

I had seen this video last year; I used it as a listening activity for my English students.  I found it inspirational.  His speech touched on subjects that I’ve spent much time contemplating – my parents, my college education, my mortality and what I want to do with my life.

I’ve often felt guilty for leaving the US and coming to Argentina.  I felt like I abandoned my family and betrayed my friends.  I’ve felt that I had to come up with excuses and justifications for being here.  I didn’t really know what I was running away from, or what I was headed for when I came here; but I came, and I’m glad.

Mr. Jobs talks about following his heart, and trusting that “your dots will connect in the future”.  I hope you’re right Mr. Jobs.  Rest in peace.  Your accomplishments were a testament to the potential of mankind and your young death a poignant reminder that we are mere mortals.
